National Library Week 2010
From April 11 to April 17, 2010, schools, campuses and communities across the country celebrate National Library Week, a time to remind the public about the contribution libraries, librarians and library workers make to their communities every day.
In today’s tough economy, libraries offer free resources to help people find jobs and learn new skills. People of all ages and backgrounds find entertainment, develop skills and come to find their place in the community. People gather for book discussions, for storytime with their children or to volunteer or look for volunteer work. Our library helps the community thrive.
What makes the library unique is access to trained professionals – librarians – to help people find and interpret the information they need to make a difference in their lives. Our libraries also help keep us connected, providing a space for people of all ages, classes and races to come together, while keeping us connected to events and people around the world.
How can the library help you thrive? National Library Week is the perfect time to find out.

"Communities Thrive @ your library" Celebrate National Library Week (April 11-17) in the Sarasota County Libraries
All eight libraries will celebrate National Library Week, April 11-17, with a variety of fun and educational activities and programs for all ages. This year’s theme, “Communities thrive @ your library,” celebrates the important contributions of libraries to communities throughout the nation.
The full schedule of programs is available for download here (PDF, 2pp.).

Among the events offered during the week are open mike readings, demonstrations of online resources, talks by authors, music programs, children’s activities and more. At several libraries, community groups will provide information about how to get involved in their activities.
In partnership with Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT), the libraries are distributing free Ride and Read bus passes during National Library Week. The passes are available while supplies last and are valid April 11 through May 30. Bus Books, another collaborative effort of SCAT and the Sarasota County Library System, is part of the libraries’ Read it and Pass it on initiative. Books are available in crates near the bus doorways on the distinctive, multicolored hybrid SCAT buses. Under the initiative, riders are invited to take and read a book that interests them and then pass it on to a friend or neighbor. Books that appeal to adults, youths and children are available.
For an early kickoff to National Library Week, Fruitville Library is coordinating a Nature Celebration from 11-1 p.m. Saturday, April 10. Farm animals, garden crafts, nature exhibits, music and giveaways will be on display. The free program is presented by the Sarasota County 4H Club, Friends of Fruitville Library and the Master Gardeners program.
“Libraries are the heart of every community and help our communities thrive,” Libraries General Manager Sarabeth Kalajian said. “At our libraries, people of all backgrounds come together for community meetings, to do research, to find homework aids, to search for jobs, to learn new computer skills and to borrow popular books and movies in different formats. We are the social hubs for Sarasota County’s communities.”
For more information, visit any of the eight libraries or contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861-5000.

Reference Question of the Month:
|
My friend told me turquoise is the new hot color of the year according to Pantone. Who or what is Pantone?
Pantone, Inc. is a company that's been in business for more than 45 years. The Pantone website, www.pantone.com, offers a brief history on the “About Us” page:
“In 1963, Lawrence Herbert, Pantone's founder, created an innovative system for identifying, matching and communicating colors to solve the problems associated with producing accurate color matches in the graphic arts community....Today, the Pantone name is known worldwide as the standard language for accurate color communication, from designer to manufacturer to retailer to customer, across a variety of industries.”
For graphic designers, the Pantone system is a way to be sure that colors on printed material (brochures, posters, boxes, etc.) will be consistent regardless of who prints them.

Free Comic Book Day Comes to the Library with Comics for All Ages
The Sarasota County Library System is once again partnering with Dark Side Comics to celebrate the comic book art form on Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 1. Over two million comic books will be given away by participating stores and libraries across the world, introducing as many people as possible to the wonders of comic books!
The wide array of comic books being published today ensures that readers of all ages — children, teens and adults – can find something appropriate to stir their imaginations. Some of the many comics being given away this year are “Iron Man,” “Superman,” “The Simpsons,” “Shrek,” “The Tick” and much more!
Now in its ninth year, Free Comic Book Day has proven to be a smashing success, spreading the word that comics are terrific reading. Even if you have never picked up a comic book, stop into any one of the eight library branches, because you never know what you will end up finding.
The Sarasota County Library system wants to spread the word that comics are alive and well in 2010. Comic books and graphic novels are considered hip, hot and smart. Comic Books have propelled to the front ranks of pop culture, many being adapted into smash hit movies. The blockbuster “Iron Man II” hits the big screen on May 7, a week after Free Comic Book Day.
Regular updates, information about comic books, and a list of participating publishers and their free comics are all online at www.FreeComicBookDay.com.
Free Comic Book Day is on Saturday, May 1 at your local Sarasota County library. Time of the event may vary depending on the location. Call 941-861-5000 for more information.

Volunteer Spotlight:
|
Libraries truly shine with the help of our volunteers. Former library employees, writers, gardeners, mothers, grandfathers, doctors, Girl Scouts, Boys Scouts and many others have devoted their time and energy to making the Sarasota County Library System flourish. The need for volunteers throughout the Library System is ongoing as the library evolves.
If you are interested in volunteering, contact the volunteer coordinator at your library.
Maybe the next new volunteer will be you!
